Blue Light 〰️

Several peer reviewed studies have confirmed that for those with mild traumatic brain injury, or post concussive syndrome (PCS) can benefit from the Blue Light Therapy.  For those with chronic TBI symptoms, headaches, dizziness, difficulty concentrating, fatigue, short term memory and executive function problems, morning exposure to blue light was found to relieve symptoms including depression and anxiety. There is also a red-light system being tested, called PBM, which also speeds up the recovery from TBI.

Don’t Overlook the Blood Brain Barrier

It has long been though that after trauma to the head, that the tissue of the brain blood barrier (BBB) can be torn or loosened.  The BBB serves as a barrier for the brain and spine that protects it from harmful molecules produced in other parts of the body.  Because it was assumed that the BBB “healed” very quickly, little effort has been made to design objective testing for BBB disruption.

The BBB is a complex system that allowed only molecules of a certain size or smaller into the brain/spine system, known as the CNS (Central Nervous System).  Now that we know that a tear in the BBB can exist for years, the consequences of chronic seizures, neurodegeneration, MS, Alzheimer’s and dementia are being studied.

Talk to your neurologist or radiologist.  MRI or DTI of the brain can look for BBB tears but since it is rarely done, you must ask for it.  The levels of certain blood compounds can also help establish BBB problems
