STORIES OF AMAZING RECOVERIES

Submitted By: Laura Alvarez

My 56 yr old brother had a brain stem stroke 08/09/09. He could only move his eyes, and now is in a wheelchair able to transfer with assist to, his voice has come back very low and he is hard to understand. He was in a neurological rehab until 2 weeks ago. His employers new insurance changed and they denied his stay.

With no where to go, I had him move in my home. His insurance also denied his home aid... We have no transportation to get him to appts.(applied for) They discharged him with the g-tube even though he has been eating for 2 months. His tube is infected. We had to buy a wheelchair lift and we are paying an aid privately.

My 79 yr old mother lives with me and helps take care of him. This has not been easy on all of us. Since his stroke, he is not easy to get along with. He has demands, and dwells on stupid things arguing with my mother and family members. He has always been a very intelligent person and that has not changed (maybe too smart). It is a miracle he is alive. I don't know anyone who has survived a brain stem stroke and is able to use their arms, legs and talk. It is a waste to see him sit here every day without getting therapy, but his insurance, including medicaid does not provide home care/therapy.

Any advise is appreciated.
